2019. Wow. What a year for the beverage industry. We really gotta hand it to White Claw for giving everyone something to talk about. Some people even say that hard seltzer defined the decade. 

Me? Well, this might be a hot take, but I just think people like sparkling water. *queue mic drop*

I digress. 

There was more to this year, and to the beverage industry, than that crazy-popular bubbly beverage. In fact, a lot of things were happening behind the scenes. Things that you probably didn’t even realize were happening while your mind was clouded by the lure of White Claw.

Take beer for instance. The category has always been on top. I mean, everyone loves beer. Right? 

Until recently. 



In 2018, the product type was neck-and-neck with spirits. Beer holding 42.61% share and spirits at 43.20%. Then 2019 came and with it—a drastic shift in buyer behavior. Beer dipped in share a steep -8.05%, all the while spirits grew 7.48%. 

What does this say for the beverage industry landscape? And more importantly, how did we get here? How did this happen?
